Audubon Park Park bench
“I made it!!” Annette and I (Dorothy) decided to run away from home, in the summer of 1947. I was told, by a horrid 4th grade teacher, that I would have to repeat the grade. Mother assured me that wouldn’t happen, even if she had to transfer me to another school. I had also been harassed by my schoolmates, to the point of tears. Enough was too much. The police found us on this bench, in Audubon Park and took us to the police station, where Mother came to retrieve us. I was not happy to be going home, and Mother was very upset with us for leaving. She found out about it because Cecile decided not to go with us and told Mother. We didn’t have a suitcase so I put clothes in a game board, folded over. I prepared a bag of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches along with a quart of milk. As we were walking to Audubon Park, a man stopped us and gave me $.50 to help us out, after he heard my sad tale.
