Morris Reiman
Morris Reiman was born on Sept. 14, 1825 in Russian Poland. He was a shopkeeper by trade. He died on Jan. 9, 1902 in California and is buried in Chicago, IL. His father was Leser Reiman and his mother was Sarah ? Morris came to the U.S. at the age of 24, in 1849. "He started his business career in New Orleans, LA as a peddler and soon became one of two of the leading retail dry goods dealers and cotton planters of the South. Morris freed his slaves before the Civil War. Morris married Lenya Wallerstein in Russia, in 1827. They had 5 children: 1. Marie, born 1845, died 1915; Married to Albert Friedlander. 2. Abraham Reiman, married Ida Kahn, died in 1890. 3. William Reiman, married Alice ?, died in 1906. 4. Miles Reiman, born in 1843 or '44, died before 1886, never married. 5. Alexander Reiman, born 1864 in Yazoo City, MS, married Cecilia Levy in 1884, Alex died April 8, 1942. Morris age 61, married Dora Sauerharing, age 49, in New York City on May 1, 1887. They lived at 317 E 57th St., NY, NY where he was a Realtor. Morris was Dora's 3rd husband. She was from the Province of Hanover Germany. When Morris died, in 1902, he left an estate worth $120,000. Real Estate at 191 Mercer St., New York City was passed on to Alexander then to Leona and Rosalind Reiman, following Alexander's death. Leona and Rosalind received the Real Estate at No. 47 Wooster St., New York City. At the time of his death, Morris Reiman had property that included a 1760 acre farm in Yazoo County, MS; No. 96 Chambers Street, NY City; and No. 88,90 and 92 E 43rd St. in Chicago. He also had some stocks and bonds. Morris moved to Chicago in 1870 and retired in 1877. In 1893, Morris lived in a "beautiful residence on Drexel Boulevard in Chicago." He was an avowed agnostic. Morris left between $50,000 and $60,000 to non-sectarian charities and scientific societies. He bequeathed $1,000to the Boston Investigator company for distributing the works of the pioneering journalist, Robert G. Ingersoll on Christians.
